The Magdalenensee is situated near the city of Villach in a flat trough in the south-west of a gravel terrace 486 m above sea level. It is about 14 ha large, has an average depth of 3, 5 m, only a few spots reach more than 5 m. The lake is solely fed by ground water, there are no surface tributaries. The underwater vegetation covers large sections of its ground.
There are 12 species of fish (KATHOLNIG, oral information):
Pike (Esox lucius)
Bass (Perca fluviatilis)
Catfish (Silurus glanis)
Chub (Leuciscus cephalus)
Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella)
Bream (Abramis brama)
Carp (Cyprinus carpio)
Bleak (Alburnus alburnus)
Roach (Rutilus rutilus)
Common rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus)
Tench (Tinca tinca)
Pike-perch (Sander lucioperca)
Carp of probably record length. While the pike shows a good natural population, the carp might not reproduce naturally. In the year 1996 a carp with a probable record weight of 26 kg and a length of 1, 3 m was caught there. It was 20 years old.
The former population of eel reduced strongly during the last few years. It even seems as if it does not exist in the lake any more. Catfish can be seen with large lengths, grass carp only in singular individuals.
